Setting up a new laptop — checklist for a smooth start
Unboxing a new laptop is exciting, but the setup can be overwhelming. Windows asks for accounts, updates take forever and you’re not sure which software you actually need. Here’s a no-nonsense checklist to get your laptop work-ready in 30 minutes.
1. Run Windows updates
This is the boring part, but also the most important. Go to Settings > Windows Update and install everything. Restart, check again, repeat until there’s nothing left. This can take 15-20 minutes but prevents problems later.
2. Remove unnecessary bloatware
Manufacturers pre-install software you don’t need: antivirus trials, games, “PC optimizers”. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps and remove anything you don’t recognise or need. Not sure? Google the name + “do I need it”.
3. Install essential software
You’ll probably need:
- Browser: Chrome, Firefox or Edge (pre-installed)
- Office: Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace (via browser)
- Communication: Teams, Zoom or Google Meet
- Security: Windows Defender is sufficient — no extra antivirus needed
- Backup: OneDrive (pre-installed) or Google Drive
4. Set up backups
Configure automatic backups before you start moving files:
- OneDrive: Go to Settings > Accounts > Windows Backup. Turn on Documents, Desktop and Pictures.
- External drive: Go to Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Backup options.
5. Review privacy settings
Windows enables a lot of data collection by default. Go to Settings > Privacy & security and turn off what you don’t want:
- Activity history
- Location services (if you don’t need them)
- Set diagnostic data to “Required”
6. Configure power settings
For home workers: set your screen to turn off after 10 minutes and your laptop to sleep after 30 minutes. Go to Settings > System > Power & battery.
