RAM or SSD upgrade: which is the better investment for your laptop?
Your laptop is slow and you’re considering an upgrade. But what do you actually need: more RAM or an SSD? The two are often confused, but they solve different problems. Here’s how to make the right choice.
What does RAM do?
RAM (random access memory) is the temporary storage your laptop uses while it’s running. More RAM means more programs and tabs you can keep open at once without everything starting to hang.
Symptoms of too little RAM:
- Laptop hangs when you open multiple programs simultaneously
- Browser slows down with many tabs
- Teams or Zoom runs slowly during video calls
- Laptop reloads apps when you switch back to them
Rule of thumb: for everyday use (Office, browser, email) 8 GB is sufficient. For Zoom + Teams + multiple browser tabs simultaneously: 16 GB is comfortable.
What does an SSD do?
An SSD (Solid State Drive) is your laptop’s storage disk — like a hard drive but without moving parts. An SSD reads and writes much faster than a traditional HDD.
Symptoms of a slow HDD (ideal candidate for SSD upgrade):
- Windows starts up extremely slowly (5+ minutes)
- Programs load slowly after startup
- You hear a faint ticking or humming from the drive
- The laptop is 6+ years old and has never had an upgrade
An SSD upgrade is the most impactful upgrade you can make to an old laptop. It literally feels like a new device.
Which upgrade do you need?
| Symptom | Likely cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Slow startup | Slow HDD | SSD |
| Programs hang after startup | HDD or too little RAM | SSD or RAM |
| Hangs with many tabs or apps | Too little RAM | RAM |
| Everything slow, even after restart | HDD + too little RAM | Both |
Not sure? A diagnosis tells you for certain. With Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) you can check whether RAM or disk is the bottleneck:
- Click Performance — is your RAM consistently above 80–90%? Then you have too little.
- Is your disk usage constantly at 100%? Then an SSD upgrade is the solution.
Can my laptop be upgraded?
Not every laptop is upgradeable. Many modern thin laptops have RAM soldered to the motherboard — then expansion isn’t possible. An SSD upgrade is more often still feasible.
A quick way to check: search your laptop model + “RAM upgrade” or “SSD upgrade” on YouTube. Or send me the model — I’ll check it for you.
What does it cost?
- SSD (you buy it yourself): a 250–500 GB quality SSD costs €40–80. Installation and migration at DeskCare from €95.
- RAM: depends on the type and number of GB. Installation on quote after diagnosis.
A diagnosis (€45) confirms exactly what’s worthwhile and what isn’t.
When to get a new laptop instead?
If your laptop is older than 8–9 years and both the processor and motherboard are outdated, an upgrade sometimes makes less sense than a new device. I’ll tell you honestly after the diagnosis — even if it means you buy elsewhere.
