Shopify or WooCommerce: which platform suits your online store?

You want to launch or have an online store built, and immediately you hit the question: Shopify or WooCommerce? Both are popular, but they work very differently. Here’s an honest overview to help you make an informed choice.

Shopify: all-in-one, ready to go

Shopify is a paid, hosted platform. You pay a monthly subscription (from around €29/month) and get hosting, updates, security, and a user-friendly dashboard. You don’t need to manage anything technical yourself.

Shopify is ideal if you want to launch quickly, have limited technical knowledge, and don’t mind a monthly cost. The downsides: you’re dependent on Shopify’s infrastructure, and certain customisations are limited without extra apps or higher plans.

WooCommerce: more flexible, but more work

WooCommerce is a free plugin for WordPress. The software itself costs nothing, but you do pay for hosting, a domain name, and any paid plugins. Those with technical knowledge — or someone to manage it — have far more freedom here.

The advantage is complete control: you can customise almost everything. The downside is that you’re also responsible for updates, security, and backups — or you outsource that.
