Starting a webshop in Belgium: the practical checklist

Starting an online store seems simple — pick a platform, upload products, done. But in Belgium there are a number of legal requirements you can’t skip. Here’s the practical checklist.

1. Company number (CBE)

Before you sell anything, you need to be registered with the Crossroads Bank for Enterprises (CBE). You do this through an accredited business counter. Your company number must appear on your website and in all communications.

2. VAT activation

As soon as you sell goods or services, you’re generally liable for VAT. Activate your VAT number through the FPS Finance. A small business exemption exists for annual turnover below €25,000, but check the details carefully — the rules are specific.

3. Terms and conditions

Required on every webshop. Your general terms and conditions set out the rules: payment terms, retention of title, liability, and how complaints are handled. Have them drafted or reviewed by someone familiar with Belgian e-commerce law.

4. Right of withdrawal (14 days)

For online sales to consumers, a legal right of withdrawal of 14 calendar days applies. The customer can return the product without giving a reason. This must be clearly stated on your webshop, including how the customer can exercise this right.

Your website almost certainly uses cookies (analytics, advertising, payment platforms). This requires a cookie banner with explicit consent and a privacy policy explaining what data you collect and how you use it. This is mandatory under GDPR.

6. Payment methods: is Bancontact required?

Not legally required, but practically essential in Belgium. A webshop without Bancontact loses a large share of Belgian customers. Stripe, Mollie, and other payment providers support Bancontact as standard.

7. Delivery information

Clearly state when customers will receive their order, how much shipping costs, and what happens if a parcel is lost. This is legally required before the purchase is made — not just on the thank-you page.

8. Visible customer service contact

Your email address or contact form must be easy to find on your webshop. A contact form alone without an email address is generally not sufficient — especially for B2C sales.
